Hard
"Hard" science fiction makes a substantial effort to remain plausible, and attempts to follow known science whenever possible. It is sometimes easier to define hard science fiction by what it doesn't have: no FTL travel, no magic, no psychic powers, no artificial gravity... the rules of currently understood physics are the parameters of the universe.
In hard science fiction the plot is usually driven by actual science, whether that means overcoming a crisis through the application of scientific knowledge or investigating a newly discovered phenomenon. Usually the characters serve the plot, rather than the other way around. First-contact is a common theme in this genre.
